Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. It involves pain and inflammation of a thick band of tissue, called the plantar fascia, which runs across the bottom of your foot — connecting your heel bone to your toes. The tissue helps to maintain the arch of the foot. As the foot flattens on the ground during gait, the plantar fascia can become over-stretched (most commonly caused by poor foot function). This can cause microscopic tears in the tissue, resulting in inflammation and pain. Heel Pain (heel spur) occurs when the plantarfascia pulls away from it’s insertion into the heel, causing bleeding, calcification and a bone spur to develop.
- Pain along the whole, or partial length of the arch
- Pain is worst when first getting out of bed.
- Pain may increase with physical activity
- Pain, burning, tightness in the arch of foot.
- Flat feet
- High arched feet
- Tight Achilles tendon
- Poor or inadequate footwear
- Running on soft surfaces or up hills.
- Ice – 10 minutes several times a day by rolling a frozen water bottle under the arch.
- Anti-Inflammatory Medication
- Footwear Modification
- Muscles strengthening & stretching that your Podiatrist can advise on.
- Strapping may help to support the arch and can be used as an indication of the long term benefit of orthotics (custom-moulded shoe inserts).
- Orthotic Therapy – If conservative measures fail to resolve pain, your Podiatrist may need to manufacture orthotics in order to correct the poor foot function that may be the cause of your pain.
